Lip Augmentation
Lip augmentation is a semi permanent or permanent enhancement that can be performed by injections or surgery to create fuller lips and can reduce fine wrinkles around the mouth. Lip Augmentation whether by an injectable filler or by a surgical procedure may be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure, such as a laser treatment, or a facelift. Injections (Non-Surgical Procedures) RESTYLANE What is it? Today, many people are showing increasing interest in correcting wrinkles and folds, shaping facial contours and augmenting the lips. With RESTYLANE, we offer patients a complete solution for tissue-tailored facial augmentation - a natural beauty lift using the body's own material. RESTYLANE is a crystal-clear, biodegradable NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) gel, which is injected into the dermis in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The result is instantaneous, producing a long-lasting, natural enhancement, gentle and safe to the skin. Since it was launched in 1996, RESTYLANE has undergone extensive histological and clinical studies with an increasing body of evidence relating to its ease of use, tolerability and effectiveness. Today, more than 1,500,000 treatments have been successfully carried out worldwide. Unlike Collagen it does not pose significant risk of allergic reaction and no skin testing is required before treatment.
Where is it injected? The most common areas to have Restylane injections are lips, nasal labial folds, smile lines and drooping corners of the mouth. Post Treatment Adverse Reactions. After the injection, some common injection-related reactions might occur. They include erythema, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness at the injection site. These reactions have generally been described as mild to moderate and typically resolve spontaneously a few days after the injection. Reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity nature have been reported in about one in every 2,000 treated patients. In rare instances, granuloma or abscess formation, localized necrosis and urticaria have been reported. Follow-up Treatments. In general, follow-up treatment is required after six to twelve months. Clinical trials reveal that RESTYLANE is effective for up to one year after the treatment of wrinkles and up to six months when enhancing lips. Clinical experience also indicates that a touch-up treatment after 2-4 weeks and regular follow-up treatments will add to the duration of the treatment effect. Eliminated lines, smoothed wrinkles, enhanced facial contours and more sensual lips. With Restylane, you can enhance your quality of life by taking years off your facial appearance, virtually instantaneously. It is, nevertheless important to know that the result directly after the treatment may not be the final result, depending on the extent of injection-related localized swelling. This is especially important after lip treatment. It is also important to know that touch-up treatment may be necessary to achieve full correction.
RADIESSE What is it?
Where is it injected? Radiesse offers similar benefits to Restylane or collagen, creating fuller lips and filling wrinkles, but the results may last for years instead of only months. Radiesse can be used to treat the wrinkles between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), the lines from the mouth to the chin ("marionette lines") and to augment the lips. In some cases, Radiesse can be used to fill certain kinds of scars and contour defects such as those that may occur after rhinoplasty. It can also be used for augmentation of the chin, cheeks and for filling tear trough deformities. Typically, the patient who has never had their lips augmented before might opt for something less permanent such as collagen or Restylane (hyaluronic acid). For those who are confident of the look they want, then Radiesse may the ideal solution. The procedure is done in the office with local anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes. Down time is minimal and the patient can look good in 24 to 36 hours. Post Treatment Adverse Reactions.Normal side effects are swelling for the first two days. Since calcium hydroxyapatite is a normal component of bone (a substance already familiar to the body) and does not contain any animal products, there is no allergy test required before treatment. In rare cases a patient may experience tiny calcium deposits that may rise to the surface of the skin and appear like small white bumps. If this occurs the deposits can easily be excised and removed. Results. It is, nevertheless important to know that the result directly after the treatment may not be the final result, depending on the extent of injection-related localized swelling. The longest follow up studies with this product have been done in Italy. Test results from Italy suggest that Radiesse may last up to two years. If a patient does not use his or her entire syringe, it can be stored at room temperature and used for a future touch up treatment. As with any injectable, the procedure should only be performed by a trained medical professional. COLLAGENWhat is it? Injectable collagen is a soft-tissue filler which can help fill in facial lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face such as deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, "sunken" cheeks, skin depressions and some types of scars, thus, improving the appearance of the skin's texture. Collagen can also be used to add a fuller, more sensuous look to the lips. Bovine dermal collagen (animal derivative) has been used safely to treat wrinkles and scars over the past 20 years. Up to four percent of patients have an allergy to bovine collagen; therefore, pretreatment allergy skin testing is required. Cosmoplast, a human derived collagen, is an alternative to animal derived collagen and does not require allergy testing. Where is it injected? Periodic injections of this material into the border of the lips achieve fuller-looking lips and softened lipstick lines (small vertical wrinkles around lip area). What are the side effects? A sensitivity test must be performed before the actual lip augmentation procedure as Collagen may cause allergic reactions in some people, and even in those whom have previous negative allergy tests. How long does it last? The enhancement typically lasts three to five months, with no recovery time.Surgical Procedures ALLODERM What is it? AlloDerm is the most popular material for surgical lip augmentation. Alloderm consists of dermis, the most durable part of skin. It is a natural collagen sheet harvested from cadavers and is screened and highly processed. The standards by which it is processed are very strict Where is it injected? Under a local anesthesia, the material is inserted through tiny incisions made in the inside corners of the mouth. Stitches are used to close the incisions. AlloDerm eventually becomes integrated with the natural tissues of the body. What are the side effects? The risk of infection is approximately 2%. As with other forms of lip augmentation there is some bruising and swelling after the procedure. Additionally the small incisions created to insert the AlloDerm require time to heal. How long does it last? SYNTHETIC IMPLANTSWhat are they? Gore-Tex, SoftForm and soft ePTFE are other synthetic options with permanent results. They do not shrink and are never absorbed into the body. They also remain in place because scar tissue forms on either end. How is it placed? To insert the implant, a small incision is made in the inside of the lip. The material is then made into the shape of a small tube and it is inserted with a small needle. What are the side effects? Synthetic implants are foreign substances and may become infected or be rejected by the body. If this occurs, the implants can be removed. How long does it last? The effect is permanent. RecoveryINJECTIONS: Recovery takes about 1-2 days after an injection. Bruising and swelling may last as long as a week.
RISKS/COMPLICATIONSSignificant complications from lip augmentation are rare. With any surgical procedure, there is always a possibility of bleeding, infection, reaction to the anesthesia, slow healing or an unexpected result. Other possible complications include asymmetrical lips, cold sores, numbness, scarring, swelling, and permanent stiffness in the lip. Implant material may move to a new location within the lips and it may also protrude unnaturally. Allergic reactions such as itching, redness or swelling may occur. Fat injections can cause lumping or scarring.

Radiesse is a synthetic long-lasting injectable filler that is composed of smooth Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres that have a diameter range of 25µm to 45µm, suspended in a biocompatible carboxymethylcellulose gel. These consistently shaped and sized particles have proven safe and biocompatible while allowing gradual tissue ingrowth. Radiesse is made from well-known biocompatible substances found in teeth and bone, which will be absorbed by the body over a period of about 5 to 6 years. There are no animal or human derived components in Radiesse. The body does not perceive it as "foreign," and there is no allergic reaction. Pretreatment skin testing is not required. Radiesse implants have been FDA approved and have been in use for many years in dental, facial, and orthopedic surgery and for vocal cord augmentation. BioForm Radiesse is still in the process of becoming approved for cosmetic use, and it is currently being used by doctors off-label until the FDA approval comes.
